Food and traditions

Red gold and new oil

A vegetable from the Americas that has become a museum, four truffle genotypes saved from an ice age, and oil mills that work by counterweight.

Here food is not a side dish to the landscape: it is the landscape. The centuries-old olive groves of Sant'Angelo, the strings of peppers hung out to dry, the woods where the truffles grow. The route can be done in any season, but the last week of August is when Altino holds the Festival.

39 km in all between the first stop and the last, by car, with stops on foot. Approximate distance.

The stops

  1. The village of the red gold, with its beam presses out in the hamlets and the centuries-old olive trees of Sant'Angelo.

  2. Listening posts with the market gardeners' proverbs and touch screens with the old recipes.

  3. How a serta is made, how it is toasted, how it is crushed in the “penele”.

  4. The salsicciotto frentano

    Upper and middle Sangro valley

Above nine hundred metres, cold dry air is all it takes to keep it.

  5. The truffle of the Sangro Valley

    Quadri, Borrello, Rosello, Pizzoferrato

Quadri, Borrello, Rosello, Pizzoferrato: the Noah's Ark of the white truffle.
