The Morgia of Gessopalena with the glass installation by Costas Varotsos

The works of Arte Natura

Art in the landscape

Since 1994 Italian and foreign artists have been invited to live in the valley and leave a work behind. Not in a gallery: inside the landscape.

  • 33 km
  • Half a day
  • Easy
  • 5 stops

The idea belongs to Sebastiano De Laurentiis, an artist from Roccascalegna: to treat the valley at the foot of the Maiella as a laboratory. The artists stay on the spot, choose the place, and only then make the work. The works stay where they are — exposed to the light, the wind and the seasons, which are part of them.

33 km in all between the first stop and the last, by car, with stops on foot. Approximate distance.

The stops

  1. How the association came about, who was involved, which works were made and where.

  2. “Orizzonti” by Costas Varotsos: sheets of glass inside the wound left by the blasting.

  3. A travertine slab set into a slope, in direct dialogue with the Maiella.

  4. “La collina degli alberi morti”

    Altino, Serranella Oasis

Pedunculate oaks found under the gravel and brought back to the surface by De Laurentiis.

  5. “La Biscia” by Nunzio Di Stefano

    Altino, Serranella Oasis

Water snake, sea monster or suspended lips: it depends where you stand.
